It’s tax season! Where are your documents?

You must file a federal income tax return if you are a U. S. citizen or resident, or a resident of Puerto Rico and if you meet the filing requirements that apply to you. You worked in 2017 and now its time to get your documents together to file your taxes.  Some people prefer to do their own taxes and some prefer to have their taxes prepared for them.  If you prefer to prepare your own taxes, a list of tax software is provided below:

Requirements for most Taxpayers:

Gross Income, filing status, and age.

Income that is subject to tax include the following

Wages, salaries, bonuses, and commissions

Certain types of fringe benefits (all compensation other than stated pay)

Tips

Unemployment compensation

Income from self-employment

Refund of state and local taxes (if you itemize deductions)

Interest (some types of interest are tax-exempt) and dividends

Gains from the sale of property (capital gains)

Hobby income

Pensions and annuities (part or all may be exempt)

IRA distributions (part or all may be exempt)

Taxable portion of social security or railroad retirement benefits

Jury duty pay

Gambling Winnings

Some Scholarships and fellowships

Debt cancellation

Most court awards
